Red kintsugi raku pot

This red pot has been thrown on a potter's wheel. It was then cooled  placed in a reduction bin with combustible material such as sawdust and paper and set alight to allow smoke to enter the crackles in the glazed surface.

The pot broke in the extreme heat of the firing and the subsequent rapid cooling. It was then carefully reassembled and repaired with gold. This is a Japanese method called kintsugi which transforms it into a more beautiful pot than it was before it was broken.

This piece is porous and not suitable for storing liquids or food.
